Putting up with the mundane for the magnificant

by Geoffrey Nixon February 19, 2010 Big City Adventure

Since my return from South Dakota a few short weeks ago, life has maintained a steady pace of working, walking and waiting. Though I have three-day weekends, they somehow manage to get away from me. I spend the entire week working just counting down the hours until I can enjoy my weekend. Then, before I know it, the days have passed and Tuesday is upon me once again. After catching a few more shows, courtesy of my sweet internship, my evenings have been filled with the dull and mundane. Though I tackled my growing laundry heap and conquered Mass Effect 2, I feel like I haven’t accomplished one thing since February began.

Thanks to an online community, John Meyer became an Anaheim Ducks fan on Jan. 1.

In November, Meyer, of Sioux Falls, launched Pick My NHL Team to find a favorite a hockey team using the loyalty of existing fans. Using video segments and guest blogs to attract readers, he asked fans to vote for their team to become his team. His site gained national attention and was featured on NHL.com and AOL.com. At the end of six weeks, the beginning 2010, Meyer counted all the votes and was declared a Ducks fan. To celebrate, he attended a game on Feb. 3 in Anaheim and met many of the Duck fans who followed his site.

Choosing home

On any given Saturday night in downtown Sioux Falls, you can find a jazz combo playing a block away from an organ-driven rock band, or rap crew performing down the street from a symphony orchestra. But at 9 p.m. on a Wednesday night in December, you can sometimes still hear the hum of the streetlights between the waves of sporadic traffic down 11th Street.

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games begin today, but local Sioux Falls music fans can also get a glimpse of competition right here on The Post.

Local alternative rock group, In Search of Atlantis, went through what we like to call ISOAlympics. I met with the five guys and challenged them five separate games. Each event was scored and totaled to find the winner. Read below to find a more detailed explanation of each game, and watch the video to find out who the winner was.

Learn to use a cell phone, please

by Eric Meyer February 11, 2010 Casually Unmethodical

There are a lot of things that have come to baffle me in this world.

Just trying to understand the basic elements of time travel has left me buffaloed, and sometimes drooling in comprehension. The enjoyment of NASCAR is a concept that eludes me like a win for the New Jersey Nets (How can watching a car go in a circle for three hours be fun?). Also, I mightily struggle to understand how people can be so bad with cell phones.

It hasn’t been an easy year for Lonnie Larsen.
As part owner of The Keg restaurants in Sioux Falls, Larsen has felt the pinch of a sour economy. With many customers cooking at home to cut back on expenses, Larsen has seen many of her regulars drop from a few nights a week to just a few days a month.

Big-hitting beers to plump up your lineup

Have you ever thought to yourself, “If Nick Punto was a beer, what beer would he be?” Probably not because it’s a pretty odd thing to think about. However, it’s crossed my mind.

I like to look at a baseball lineup like a beer menu. You need those easy-drinking, consistent beers just like you need your lead-off men and two-hole hitters. It’s also nice to have some of those higher-quality beers that pack a little more punch like your RBI men down in the middle of the order. Then there is guy who may mostly strike out, run the bases like he’s knee-deep in mud and throw like your grandmother. But, when he hits, he hits big.
